The story of two young siblings from a wealthy theatrical family in turn-of-the-century Sweden. After their father dies, their mother marries a stern, cruel bishop. The children are uprooted from their bohemian, loving home and forced into the austere and oppressive household of their stepfather, where magic and imagination become their only escape.
