For Sama (2019)
This documentary is both a love letter from a young mother to her infant daughter, Sama, and a devastating chronicle of life in Aleppo, Syria, during the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. The filmmaker, Waad al-Kateab, documents her life over five years, capturing her marriage to a doctor, the birth of her daughter, and their desperate struggle to survive as their city is destroyed by airstrikes. The film is a raw, first-hand account of the human cost of war, the resilience of a community, and the impossible choices faced by those who choose to stay.
