In a fantastical world divided by gravity, a young girl named Patema lives in an underground civilization where the inhabitants are anchored to the ground to avoid falling "up" into the sky. Curious about the world above, she ventures into a forbidden area and tumbles into the open air, only to find herself falling upward toward the sky. She is rescued by a boy from a surface world where gravity is reversed. Together, they form an unlikely bond and embark on a journey to uncover the secret that split their worlds apart and threatens both societies.
