A young atheist hairdresser in Pittsburgh begins to spontaneously exhibit the wounds of Christ, known as the stigmata. The Vatican dispatches a priest and scientist to investigate the phenomenon, seeking a rational explanation. He soon uncovers a dangerous church secret connected to the woman's ordeal, forcing him to question his faith and science as a malevolent force seems to possess her.
